How a leading pharma company tackled data management challenges and streamlined serialized product tracking

Business Case

A leading pharmaceutical company was facing data management and integration challenges with their serialized product tracking (SPT) data within the supply chain. The company stored the entire SPT data within SAP, and for operational efficiency they further bifurcated the data (as per the business verticals) and stored in three different systems within SAP namely,

  • Advanced Track and Trace Pharma (ATTP)- A serial number management solution built to label and track products with serial numbers

  • Information Collaboration Hub- To exchange information for serialized pharmaceutical products

  • ERP Central Component (ECC)- Integrate digital information that's created in one area of a business with data from other areas of the same business in real time

For smooth serialization product tracking operations there is a need for a consolidated view of all the data residing in the above systems. Previously, due to the lack of such a view, the serialization manager, quality assurance manager, regulatory compliance manager and the supply chain manager manually monitored and checked the data from different SAP sources. This process was tedious and time consuming.

The stakeholders also required a consolidated report where they can track business and product information such as location, batch, lot status, transaction, serialization and regulatory events for reporting. Previously, the stakeholders manually downloaded data from the different SAP systems and consolidated using Microsoft excel. Due to the huge data load, this manual processing was tedious, and since these reports were not on demand, it took weeks to generate a single report. The vice president of the SPT team wanted to streamline data management and eliminated the manual data processing.

The company trusted i2e Consulting to design a datalake for all the SAP data sources, and integrate data as per specifications such as lot and batch size, product transaction events, serialized product information tracking, etc.

Our Solution

Our data experts examined the data sources, understood the client’s requirements and built a data lake that successfully consolidated the product tracking data from all three data sources into a single data lake.

To achieve a comprehensive view of the product tracking operations through a data lake, our data engineers used PySpark for data modelling and to integrate multiple data objects, they then stored this modelled data by building a data warehouse using Hive which was then sourced to the datalake. This helped business to extract reports and created a uniform view of the product tracking eco-system.

The data model would integrate the data extracted from SAP systems and the data handling capacity of Spark made sure the monitoring of large volumes of data was done efficiently.

The data lake also ensured an integrated report for business to view the data instead of navigating through multiple SAP systems. This eliminated the manual efforts needed to generate consolidated reports.

Benefits

  • Single consolidated view of all the product tracking data stored in multiple data sources.

  • An integrated report for business to view the data, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple views of the SAP system.

  • Significant reduction in the turnaround time in preparing the consolidated report.

  • Daily data monitoring, instead of days lost in consolidating the data.
